Carnival Highlights:
Samba Parade
The biggest party of Carnival is the legendary Samba Parade with its myriad of exquisite costumes and dancing. The crowd's enthusiasm and energy provides an electric atmosphere as 14 of the best Samba Schools parade on the last Sunday and Monday of Lent in the Sambadrome. This marathon party starts at seven in the evening and goes on until dawn the next day.
Carnival Balls
Carnival Balls are grand celebrations that occur on various evenings over the four days of Carnival. The premier events usually have at least two bands taking turns entertaining the guests, with professional dancers and entertainers circulating through the crowd. These parties often have particular themes, like costume, singles only, mixed or gay.
Street Parades
Each neighborhood in Rio is proud to host their own street parade during Carnival time. This outdoor party is comprised of an orchestra marching through the streets of the district, followed by crowds of enthusiastic revelers and samba dancers dressed in everything from outlandish costumes, to bathing suits, to drag. It's free, it's spontaneous, and it's always lots of fun.
